The above is a famous photograph taken in 1945 of the United States flag being raised atop Mount Surabachi during what was considered to be one of the bloodiest battles of WWII; the battle of Iwo Jima. Later made into a monument displayed in many locations across the country it would reflect the incredible sacrifices of some of our country’s bravest marines.
Immediately catching my attention is the fact that these six men all come together to accomplish one monumental, yet simplistic action of raising a flag. However, this would live on in history as one of the most triumphant moments for the United States of America and for the beloved Marine Corps.
The photo speaks of pure perseverance and sheer tenacity without the display of all the death and despair these men dealt with below the mountain. In turn, knowing more about the origin and circumstance of the photo allows for a greater appreciation of what is actually being displayed.
My time spent in the United States Marine Corps may influence my perspective on the photograph, so everyone may not see eye to eye with me on these thoughts. However, given my experiences I believe I am able to see the photo with much more clarity and a much deeper analyzation. The emotion trapped in the photograph Is able to be tied to so much of my life, the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. Even though I have experienced some extremely traumatic events, I have never let them keep me down. Repeatedly getting back up no matter how hard the set back was. It screams that no matter how bad things may appear there is always a way to turn things around and come back even stronger; even harder to knock down than in the past.
