Every morning in the marine corps we get together in a formation by company for accountability of each and every marine. Following these formations are instructions to every platoon commander and platoon sergeant on what the plan of the day is for there subordinates. Before the day can be executed however, physical training must happen first every day.
It was a chilly humid morning before the sun was even up in Okinawa, Japan. I was stationed at Camp Hansen and we were getting ready to execute our morning physical training. Being the foolish 20 year old marine at the time, which in Japan was of legal drinking age. I decided to partake in a few too many beers with the guys the night prior. This led to me making the horrible mistake of forgetting to put on my running shoes when heading down to company formation.
Due to my negligence in making sure I was prepared for the morning physical training my fellow brothers would have to pay the price for me. The platoon sergeant made my fellow marines throw me over there shoulders and carry me on a 10 mile run, taking turns carrying my dead weight until finally returning back to the barracks.
I know what you’re probably thinking at this point, the punishment has been dealt and I probably shouldn’t let it happen again. That would have been the perfect scenario had it gone down that way, but it did not. I now had a platoon full of pissed off marines who wanted there fair piece of revenge against the guy who made the already dreadful morning run ten times worse.
Needless to say at this point, I payed the price for the following days to come because of my stupidity and negligence. A hard lesson learned but one that you can absolutely bet I did not make again.
