Ill start off by saying that I legitimately enjoyed viewing Moonlight. The Film starts off by showing us a piece of what me might expect the theme of the film to be about. A rough neighborhood in Miami riddled with drugs and gang violence. Immediately we begin to follow the story of a young man growing up in this neighborhood by the name of Chiron. We quickly learn of the lifestyle Chiron lives when he’s taken in by a drug dealer and his wife, once we see the way Chiron’s mother lives and drug use she deals with we quickly see the irony behind the type of person that chooses to help out Chiron. The film is separated into chapters of Chiron’s life and allows us to see how both ends of these heavy influences lead him to create his own path. As to no surprise to most viewers, Chiron takes the path down the drug and gang involved road. The ending not being much of a surprise to me however, as Chiron goes back to see his friend Kevin after the confusing moment they deal with as teenagers. Only to discover what they were missing was each other all these years.
I chose to analyze the climax of Moonlight, or at least through my viewing I saw it to be the climax. It’s the point where everything changes for Chiron, he receives a beating from his classmates and gets ridiculed instead of helped by the school staff. This scene uses a certain combination of special effects to let the viewer know something drastic is about to happen. The camera and Chiron are moving really fast and the use of suspenseful music provides insight that what it is, is not good. This scene is where the film takes a turning point, Chiron has had enough of being the nice young man he was through the first half of the film.
What We Do in the Shadows is an extremely dark comedy. The film is taken in a documentary form, it involves a group of men living all under one roof with a very interesting quality; they are vampires. After getting a detailed description of how each member of the house became a vampire. The film delves into what these guys do in their everyday lives and how they manage to still be a part of their small town village. We quickly find out that they’re not so good at it actually. The film and its entirety is watching these men fail miserably at every attempt to fit in, in a normal day and age. With the help of a regular human they begin to figure out some of the ways a normal person might carry themselves. The whole time this film is going they give you something to laugh at or about. The documentary camera angles gives this film its extra bit of spark. To delve into the everyday lives of Vampires. A hilarious watch with some interesting laughing points.
